Writers. There’s something you all need to do.

Reclaim your power.

I know. I know sharing your writing (AKA a piece of your soul) with the world is so scary. It can make you feel fragile and like you’re a small hedgehog trusting predators with your soft underbelly. It is amazing you share your words anyway. You are all so brave.

But remember: writing and publishing are big businesses. There’s no room to feel scared. You need to make sure that the people you trust with your words are worthy.

I receive way too many emails from writers feeling uncomfortable…but also like they can’t question anyone that is part of the business of their books. I see too many writers so grateful to be chosen that they’re willing to take any scraps that are offered. But you are not a charity case. You wrote something beautiful and precious that has value. You deserve to be able to ask your agent who they submitted your work to. Or to check in if you have a legitimate question or feel like it has been an unreasonably long amount of time since you’ve heard an update. You can ask questions -- and you should.

I understand finally feeling like you have someone on your side and you don’t want to rock the boat. But if the boat sinks because you asked a few questions…how steady was it anyway?
