Hi Kristen. Thank you for the list. It mimics a lot of what I've read and heard as I begin my own self-publishing journey for my debut novel. It's been great to see how willing other self-published authors are to share their triumphs and trials. Keep up the good work.
Great summary! And I 💯 agree with an ISBN. I always do one each for print and digital; it means my books are discoverable across platforms and retailers. I think it's one of the reasons i have a lot of books in libraries, for an indie.
Kristen, thank you for this concise and succinct list. My writing coach gives our little writing group a template and courses on this topic, but she does not cover formatting. so bonus. I scribbled down Atticus, Reedsy and Bowker. Thanks a ton! :)
So happy to help! And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many more resources out there, but once you start researching ideally you’ll find more.
Great info! I flagged the post for when I republish my first novel, now that I have my rights back from the small press that originally printed it. Having been published before, I can’t expect an agent to represent this novel, but I do want to give it a second chance at finding its place in the world, so self-publishing is my best bet. Thanks!
Excellent list! Fortunately, I pieced most of this together over the past couple of years, but I sure wish I'd had a more comprehensive and to-the-point list earlier. Still, I was wondering about copyright, so that's another box checked. Thanks!
So, it's kind of implied here by giving people this list, but maybe worth mentioning that if people want to be successful in publishing, they need to have a plan. Writing a book is hard enough, and marketing it and getting people to be interested is an entirely different beast. It's not impossible, but you MUST have a plan. Do your research, use the tools available, and find as many lists like Kristen's as you can to piece your tailored plan together so you're not releasing your book to the wind and praying it takes off. Because most likely, it won't, unless you're incredibly lucky.
Thank you!! Great recommendations. I love that you emphasized marketing and how it’s not super simple or super fast. I liked that you presented it without any rose colored glasses.
Sorry, I accidentally deleted your comment. I don’t know of any, but you can always publish it yourself. Readers do not care how books are published. They just care that they can read them.
I'd suggest joining the Alliance of Independent Authors. They are a FANTASTIC resource and so friendly. 🌟
Absolutely worth the price of admission 🙌
Great recommendation!

Oh, that’s great to hear! It might take a little bit more money, but it’s worth it to get more placement!

So happy to help! And I’ve been in this business for too long to sugarcoat anything. Although I do wear glasses, totally editor stereotype over here!
