Thanks for this upbeat, hopeful post and update on your life. It is so refreshing to get a positive message amidst the pressures of writing for (future) publication.
Everything here fits me. I was the kid reading on the bleachers, confused about the rules of whatever game was being played. I watch all the same shows; also Dexter, Breaking Bad and Death in Paradise were great.
It’s such a testament what your client said, and one I understand. I used to be an avid runner, although I always ran (and trained for marathons) alone. I know exactly what that feels like; it’s happened to me. It would’ve felt amazing to have someone hold out their hand, lift me up and help me to the finish line. That speaks volumes about who you are.
I never saw Death in Paradise have to watch that one. I hope someone to hold your hand now in writing that you didn’t have when running marathons, although running a marathon at all is very impressive!!
Great post! The story about your nickname reminded me of what happened when I was a kid. Family and friends called me “Ris,” pronounced like the peanut butter cup. And, oftentimes, an “sy” would be added to the end, changing the name to “Rissy.” One day, a bunch of us were playing outside when a new family moved into our neighborhood. My mom went over to say hello, and while chitchatting on the stoop, the new neighbor asked, “Why is everyone calling that little girl ‘Greasy?’” My mom thought it was absolutely hilarious. 🤣
Hi! I'm one of your new subscribers! One of my favorite parts of Substack is getting a peek into the publishing industry, which, as a small-town girl myself, feels so foreign and impossible to get into. So I'm excited to follow along!
Welcome! I am so glad you're here. And publishing is a business where dreams come true all the time - no reason some of those dreams can't be yours! :)
I absolutely love that I've known you since 2010 and you edited my first ten or so crime novels! 🥰‼️
Yes! I love how we’ve both grown from there in amazing ways!

Oh I love your watch list 😍 after my own heart 🧡
